Riot police protest outside riot police headquarters in Athens on Thursday in a symbolic attempt to prevent their law enforcement colleagues leaving for work. The Athens Police Union is angry over impending wage cuts, which are expected to be part of the latest package of government cost cutting measures. Skirmishes broke out between the protesters and riot police, who were due to travel to the northern city of Thessaloniki to guard an annual trade fair that opens on Saturday. The government plans to introduce nearly 12 billion euros of cost cutting measures to reduce the country's budget deficit over the next two years. It's expected that 360 million euros are to come from cutting public sector wages in professions such as the police, judges and doctors.
